Hi, I'm Dr. Amy Gearin at Gearin Aesthetic and General Dentistry, and I'm here to talk to you about your dental exam. We get a lot of questions regarding what that entails. When we do your dental exam, we're gathering a bunch of information about your teeth, what you've had done on your teeth, and things that you might possibly need in the future.
Dental Exams at Gearin Aesthetic and General Dentistry
We gather a series of information. We get photos, we get x-rays. I sit down and look at each tooth individually, and then I put that information together, assess it, and relay that information back to you. A full dental exam is going to take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes for us to get all of that information and put it together for you.
How often should you get your teeth cleaned and an examination?
We recommend that you get your teeth cleaned and examined at least every six months, depending on the health of your teeth and gums.
How can I tell if I have a cavity?
There are many different ways that we assess this problem. We look at x-rays, we look at photos, and I also examine your teeth themselves.
Will you fix my tooth on the same day as the examination?
It depends on what you need, what kind of time you have available, and what we have ready in our schedule for you.
How do you know if I need a root canal?
It depends on how extensive the problem in your tooth is. Sometimes we know immediately when we get into the tooth if it reaches the nerve. Sometimes we have to wait and see if the pain develops or if the sensitivity goes away.
Is the dental exam painful?
We try to make the exam as comfortable as possible. We're just gathering information and helping you understand what you need to make your teeth healthy.
What do I need to do before my dental exam?
We are just happy to have you here. We'll take care of everything. We have toothbrushes here at the office if you don't have time to brush before you come in. We just want to get to know you and help you with your dental needs.
